Introductions

Before we get into the full swing of things, you've got a few things to do:

1. Check out the course syllabus and calendar! It'll give you a good idea as to what to expect in the coming months

2. Print out the readings. You'll need to have these all printed out by Friday, so you might as well do it now and stop procrastinating >:0

3. Introduce yourself! I'd like us to think of this blog as a space for us to exchange ideas, give advice, ask questions, and it's a good opportunity for us to get to know each other a bit better. Please post in the comments section your name, the time your class with me meets, and something about yourself as a writer/thinker/gendered person in this world. I'll go first to break the ice:

My name's Katie, but you can call me Professor Hoerth (which is, by the way, pronounced like earth but with an H. Don't worry, you can totally mispronounce my name all you want. I'm used to it).

I'm really passionate about feminism. I love to write about feminism, read about it, explore it, reconsider it. I think "feminism" is a really huge, complex and loaded term, and so my conception of what it means to be a feminist might be really different than yours, and I think that's totally cool. Here are a few fun facts about me: I love poetry, baking, blogging, and teaching. Oh, and if you were planning on bringing me food, I have the world's biggest sweet tooth. My favorite food is cheese cake. Just sayin' ;-)

Your turn!

    1. I was raised with brothers, too! So cool. In this class, we'll be examining and reading other people's views on gender, but just as important, also exploring and constructing our own. Looking forward to having you in class this semester.

  7. Hi Professor, It's Victoria again! I really enjoyed your freshman English class and I have a funny feeling you’re going to make this class just as exciting. As far as gender roles well since the beginning of time women have been detrimental roles in children’s settings however have lacked in corporate settings. I interested to learn about empowering women.

Hi Mrs. Hoerth, I really liked your class last semester and I was glad that you were going to teach 1302 and it was more interesting, because it was focused on feminism. I think as a writer it would be very interesting to work with this term, because there is a lot of meaning behind it.

I was thrilled when I saw that you were going to be teaching 1302 talking about feminism. 19. Hello, my name is Lucero Garcia. I'm 19 years old, i'm a computer engineering major and I work at abercrombie kids. I consider myself a bit of a feminist so I'm very exited about this class. There aren't many women in computer science and engineering fields. From your class I would love to gain the knowledge to help promote diversity in those fields.

    1. That's a really good point about having few women in engineering classes, and it MIGHT be something you'll want to explore through your projects this semester. Lorber talks about gender roles being something we learn, so I wonder if maybe that has something to do with why? Something to think about.

My name is Stephanie Garcia, & I go by Steph for short.  I attend the MWF 8:45 class. I am majoring in Biology Pre-Dent, and minoring in English. I am ecstatic to be taking this class because during my Senior year my English teacher taught us a lot over this subject of Feminism,  and Marxist.. we analyzed several readings and even wrote several papers about the topic. I find Feminism to be an extremely intresting topic and am looking foward to learning more about it. I am looking foward to spending another semester with Proff. Hoerth, and seeing the goals she has for us. (:
